Light & Heavy Box $250 — A wooden box, about 9 inches square, is very easy for the magician to pick up. A silk handkerchief is placed inside, and a volunteer from the audience—preferably a “strong man”—is now requested to try to lift the box. Using all his might, he cannot. The box will not budge! The magician removes the silk handkerchief and then once again lifts the box effortlessly. This magic trick is a magician’s classic test-of-strength illusion, with a history of performance dating back to the father of modern magic, nineteenth-century French magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. (Although the method used to achieve this effect is quite different using this modern box!)
